Andrea Williams, Soundkünstlerin aus NYC haut sich mit Videokünstlerin Anna Lerchbaumer und Mixed-Media-Künstler ludwig technique (beide aus Innsbruck) auf ein Packerl, um mit einer interaktiven (Sound-)Performance nebst Videoinstallationen das Motel zu "aktivieren". Der Ort, ehemaliger "Glockenhof" der Grassmayr Glockengießerei, und schon bald vielleicht Südring-Auffahrt, ist in seiner Zwischennutzung schon zum Treffpunkt für lokale KünstlerInnen und QuerdenkerInnen aller Disziplinen geworden. Grund genug, den Ort in seiner transformativen Ganzheit künstlerisch aufleben zu lassen. Grassmayr spendiert für den Abend einige Live-Instrumente, und die Motel-Crew sorgt für das leibliche Wohl.
Statement der KünstlerInnen:
Wir möchten versuchen, an der Mission der Brache anzuknüpfen, um den Raum des Motel in seiner Einzigartigkeit aufleben zu lassen. Der Ort selbst ist ein Architekturkörper, der zum Schwingen gebracht werden soll, und so in fühlbare Interaktion mit den Menschen vor Ort treten soll. Das Publikum ist eingeladen, zum Ende der Performance mit bereitgestellten Instrumenten selbst in interaktion mit dem Raum zu treten, und ihre eigene Resonanz zu finden.
Die Performance nähert sich forschend den vielen verschachtelten Ebenen und Schichten der Interaktion, die innerhalb des Motel-Gebiets stattfinden. Field-Recordings vom Ort sind ein Mittel, um die Vorstellungskraft anzuregen und jeder/jedem BetrachterIn eine persönliche Geschichte zu erzählen. Die aufgezeichneten Töne und Geräusche zeigen die akustische Einzigartigkeit des Motels wie seine Einbettung in die Umgebung, und richten die Aufmerksamkeit auf Dinge, die sonst vielleicht unbeachtet bleiben.
Eine temporäre Installation formt sich aus einem Müllhaufen als Gegenpol zur Gebäudestruktur des Motel. Video-Feedbackschleifen vergrößern Bewegungen und (Schall-)Wellen, interagieren mit den BesucherInnen und dem Ort. Dazu wird Videomaterial vom Ort als weiteres rekursives Element fragmentiert in den Raum zurückgeworfen.
Über Andrea Williams
Die New Yorker Soundkünstlerin und Komponisting Andrea Williams, verwendet in ihren Werken orts-spezifische Soundelemente und unterschwellige Hinweise um die unsichtbaren Verbindungen zwischen den Menschen und ihrer Umgebung erkennbar zu machen. In ihren Kompositionen verwendet die Künstlerin häufig Field-Recordings, Instrumente und digitale Technik in Verbindung mit den Raumklängen der Veranstaltungsorte selbst. Sie hat Soundwalks in New York City und der San Francisco Bay Area geleitet, sowie als Solokünstlerin und mit anderen MusikerInnen und KünstlerInnen in Gallerien und Off-Spaces auf der ganzen Welt bespielt. Unter anderem gastierte die Künstlerin im Whitney Museum, Eyebeam Art+Technology Center, am Observatori Festival, bei NPR, auf der Miami Art Fair und war Mamori sound artist in residence im Amazonas Regenwald. Andrea Williams ist zur Zeit Vorstandsmitglied der American Society for Acoustic Ecology, Co-Direktorin von 23five, Inc. wenn sie nicht gerade am Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute NY ihren PhD in Electronic Arts schreibt.

New York sound artist, Andrea Williams, and local Innsbruck mixed media artist, ludwig technique form a collaborative sound and video performance with support by local video artist Anna Lerchbaumer, which activates the unique and temporal space of the Motel. The site has become platform and meeting place for national and international artists, and discrete thinkers from all disciplines. It is slated for street development by the city of Innsbruck and will be available for traffic only from September 2015. The site of Motel has gone through several permutations over time, including use by Grassmayr Bell Foundry, who is donating instruments for the performance. Food and drinks will be provided by the Motel crew from 6 pm onwards.
Statement by the artists:
We are building on the mission of Motel: activating the space that is alive with sounds and unique character. The site itself is an architectural body that will resonate and provide a visceral feedback loop to the body of participants. Participants are then invited to improvise with small instruments to find their individual resonance within the outdoor space.
We want to explore the many recursive layers of interaction which occur within the space. Field recordings are used with the intent to activate the imagination, forming personal narratives for the participant. The recorded material reveals the unique architectural acoustics of Motel and also what is common to daily life of Innsbruck, Austria, sounds that may often go unnoticed on a conscious level.
A temporary sculpture/installation forms a counter-point to the architectural structure of the Motel. Video installations utilizing feedback-loops magnify the movements and vibrations in the space, interacting with participants and the soundwaves. Footage of the Motel site is presented as a fractured installation, adding another dimension of self-reference.
Andrea Williams
New York sound artist and composer, Andrea Williams, utilizes site-specific elements and perceptual cues to reveal the unseen connections between people and their environment. Her compositions make use of field recordings, instruments, computer technologies and the sound of the performance space itself. She has led soundwalks in New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area, and has shown and performed both solo and with various musicians and artists at galleries and alternative spaces internationally, such as the Whitney Museum, Eyebeam Art+Technology Center, Observatori Festival, Children’s Creativity Museum, NPR, Miami Art Fair, and the Mamori sound artist residency in the Amazon rainforest. She is a board member of the American Society for Acoustic Ecology, a Co-Director at-large of 23five, Inc., but she is currently mostly buried in her studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in NY for her PhD in Electronic Arts.
